The Dark Esquire - Situation Day 4 giveaway

And so it continues....

Today we present to you the Songs Against Space Mix of Situation taking you deep into the cosmos - the black obelisk - swirling dark matter as the stars collapse and the black hole sucks you under. Emerging from the vortex is a driving marching drumbeat. I'm not sure where we've ended up or what this means but sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.

Songs against space - we salute you.

12" now available from:

Choose your poison.

Buy the digital release from Beatport (these 4x tracks aren't on the 12" and include an alternative version of Situation as well as remixes from Night Plane and Liquid Vega):

The Dark Esquire - Situation Day 2 giveaway

The situation is real....

As mentioned yesterday we're giving away a Dark Esquire track every day this week to celebrate the fact that his debut single SITUATION is out this week.

So, today we have the Invisible Hammer Remix of Situation.

Beats and pieces. Downtempo drums. Melancholic keyboards and guitar lines. Wandering souls. Skyward glances. Overcoats and grey skies. DJ Shadow casting a cursory nod from across the street.

Funny how people have been remixing this and making it darker. More moody. More melancholic.

320kps for maximum listening pleasure. Up for 7 days / 100 downloads.

Tomorrow, another Dark Esquire mp3. Stay tuned.

Buy the 12" here:

Download up on Beatport soon.....

BLACK MERLIN waits in the shadows.

He waits.

You see him in the corner of your eye. He's a bit like Frank from Donnie Darko. The plane engine crashes down. The mirror bleeds. The barrel reloads - click click - the drums pound. The sound reverses and spirals through your mind.

Black Merlin wonders why your fear is so clear to see. Do you have no strength of will. Do you simply accept what's given to you? Do you not think to question? The darkness overtakes you sometimes.

After the dark comes the light of the day.

((2010))

The year of the black stuff.

Themes for great cities

Germany holds a special place in Thisisnotanexit's heart. The home of Motorik - the home of Bowie's Low - the home of Kraftwerk - the home of Shackleton - the home of DAF - the home of Tresor - the home of Themes For Great Cities.

The debut release on Themes For Great Cities is a vinyl only release featuring three different artists. No downloads. Just vinyl. Just the black stuff. 300 of them in beautiful printed sleeves. High concept art. The good stuff.

First up is Stabil Elite with a track named KRAUTKAMERAD. I have no idea what this means. All I know is its a sublime piece of motorik - driving driving driving kraut beats - with a new wave vocal. Swirling synths. 2nd half is the kill. Straight to the dancefloor for a lost in the moment eyes closed moment. Momentary bliss. 9:09 moments.

Second is Jantronix and CHEOPS. Acid disco. Wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah. Check the licks. Sounding like Harvey's new release (but better) guitars and acid. It's a 2010 sound.

Third is Earl and SHAPESHIFTER. Beats falling over themselves but somehow staying in control. Embrace the dark - These New Puritans somehow stand and watch and learn.

Dusseldorf. A new sound. Get onto it.

New Thisisnotanexit Webstore

We have a new Thisisnotanexit webstore as the old one was just a bit clunky and un-user friendly. It's now much sleeker thanks to our friends at Big Cartel with search functionality, a proper basket and checkout system plus rss feed for new products being added. We'll be updating this regularly with very limited and exclusive items so keep checking back.

We've also got The Dark Esquire Situation 12" and Thisisnotanexit Manifesto #1 2 x cd both up for order. They'll be in stock this week so order now to get them before the shops.

Once Big Cartel add downloadability to their products we'll also have a Thisisnotanexit download store. Until then it's just vinyl and cds.

Eat Your Own Ears: Detachments @ Cargo Tonight (preview from The Guardian Guide)

The Eat Your Own Ears crew are nothing if not consistent. Since their inception, they've managed to hover enticingly between the underground and overground, offering a platform to all kinds of awe-inspiring music. It looks like there'll be no slacking from them in 2010 either, as one of their first events of the year already looks like it's going to be one of the most exciting. Showcasing two bands so hotly tipped it's a surprise that neither of them have spontaneously combusted, tonight Cargo would do well to line the stage in flame-retardant tape. First up are Detachments, who have been making sweet music with a dream production gang which includes James Ford, Trevor Jackson, Tim Goldsworthy and Andrew Weatherall. Then it's the turn of tipped London lo-fi electro trio Is Tropical, while DJ action from Stopmakingme will bind the whole thing together in order to make a near-perfect pop package.

Cargo, EC2, Sat

Leonie Cooper

***It's free entry tonight before 11pm with Detachments onstage at 10pm. See you there!***
