The Grinderman album has been on heavy rotation recently - and No Pussy Blues has the kind of guitar onslaught that clears your mind! I've yet to experience it live or in a club but I know a few of the more adventurous DJs are playing it. Would love to hear the guitar attack in a smoky dimly lit basement with a strobe going off...but I digress, have a look at Nick and the boys performing No Pussy Blues on Later With Jools Holland. Killer I tell you.

I also picked up the new Innervision this week featuring the so massive BALANDINE (i talked about this the other week - its got a breakdown to die for) and a tasty space age techno b-side ENOI. Both great stuff. Ame have also contributed a Top 10 chart to Beatport which is as you'd expect full of things worth checking.

I also got the Wild Rumpus - Musical Blaze Up 12" on Bitches Brew too. Its all about the Rub N Tug Bitches mix crazy banjo like guitars, a disco dub bassline and a wonkiness that only Rub N Tug can pull off. I first heard this on Lindstrom & Thomas' essential mix a few weeks ago and it sounds like this could be a massive summer anthem. Honest.

Track of the weekend: Studio - West Side (Brennan Green Remix) - not sure if its getting a proper release but this little white label sneaked out on Friday. Hot summer disco action from the man Brennan Green (whose remix of Andrew Allsgood on Truffle is also super hot!).

Its all about techno. The dirty word in the world of dance music - electro-house (or electronic influenced house as some people call it) and minimal are the buzz words of the day. Oh yeah and nu-rave but we don't mention that round these parts.

Sometimes you can't beat some classic detroit influenced soulful deep techno - the drifting strings, the melancholic minor key synth lines - its the sound of my ipod at the moment as out of nowhere came a bunch of stuff that just made me sit up and take notice.

The first is Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann. The Efdemin album came out this week on Dial and is seriously deep. Standout track La Ratafia is deep enough to drown in - the rest of the album doesn't equal this (and lets be honest ridiculously high) height but is worth listening to at home or in the club repeatedly. Just let go and fall into this beaut.

Pantha Du Prince is apparently from Antartica. Wherever he's from he's produced one of the killer tracks of 2007. Saturn Strobe is the kind of track that won't destroy a big club but man oh man this kills me everytime I hear it. Soaring strings underpin this piece of emotion. People say that techno is too raw - too mechanical - no feeling. I defy anyone not to listen to this and not feel ALIVE and moved. Seriously, stick it on LOUD and sit back. No messing about writing an email, reading the paper, cooking your tea, sit back and just LISTEN to this.

Lindstrom & Thomas have reached the heady heights of being picked by Peter Tong for an Essential Mix. This went out last Sunday evening but for those that missed it there's a link below for you to go and download an mp3. There's been alot of controversy about this mix as the beards have complained that this is too HARD and not enough pure disco and prog. I say f8ck that, this mix absolutely kills it. The new single from LSB (a collaboration between Baby G and Pete Herbert) is up on their myspace page entitled FOG. It takes a healthy chunk of Crown Heights Affairs - You Gave Me Love and turns it into a summer disco belter. Not sure when its out - all I know is its forthcoming on Eskimo but it sounds great even through the tinny myspace player and a pair of low quality headphones! There's also a remix of Ilija Rudmans After Midnight up too which is amazing - continuing on from Ilijas amazing track UMMA which came out on Infant its another record to the list of must purchases.

Sculpture is also playing at The Macbeth in Hoxton Saturday 28th April - so thats worth checking out methinks. Its a great little venue and Sculpture always brings the noise. He's got a track called SKRAM which might come out on Thisisnotanexit Records if it ever gets finished.

Sculpture is a bit of a perfectionist you see.

There is certainly method to his madness.

I'm obsessed with the soundtrack to The Fountain this past week. Mogwai and The Kronos Quartet collaborations and some truly stunning stuff on there - it was a shame the film got royally panned when it came out when it was in fact a really beautiful film. But this is the UK and we'd much rather consume rubbish than deal with anything of real substance.

I'm also loving the new Lindstrom & Solade stuff - Lets Practice is out today on vinyl (and apparently Todd Terje has done a remix - not sure if thats true or if and when its coming out) but they have also covered the Vangelis - Demis Roussos collaboration from Earth LET IT HAPPEN which will be the exclusive track on the forthcoming LATE NIGHT TALES on Azuli. It'll be released as a tasty little 7" at some point in a few months - but if you can't wait you can listen to it on their myspace page.

1. Battles - Mirrored LP

Nothing gets close to the amazingness of the single ATLAS but this is a mighty fine album.

2. Glass Candy - Miss Broadway

Glass Candy cover an old french disco track by Belle Epoque and go discoball-tastic. Forthcoming on Italians Do It Better its a label to watch...plus FARAH is also signed up and her stuff sounds exciting too. Dark stalker disco.

3. Prinzhorn Dance School - Up! Up! Up!

New single from DFA signings Prinzhorn Dance School - not as good as their last single - but bodes for an interesting debut album. Already polarising people but in this day an age making people have an opinion is no bad thing.

4. Pylon - Gyrate LP

Being re-released on DFA apparently. A hard to find classic from 1980.

5. Ilya Santana - Discotized

Analogue Metro Area / Daniel Wang-esque disco with a bassline that just absolutely kills on a good soundsystem. He released a track a few years ago on Balihu but this is a dancefloor bomb.

6. Beyond The Wizards Sleeve - George LP

More edits and shiznit from Erol and his best mate. Not a big fan of Erol as a remixer (a better DJ) but his Beyond The Wizards Sleeve edits are always interesting and worth a look.

7. Michoacan - 2 Bullets (DJ Harvey Masterdata Remix)

Harvey mentalism. You can guarantee that DJ History are excited as he isn't prolific - but thats living in Hawaii for you. He's also remixed the new LCD Soundsystem single ALL MY FRIENDS so keep your ear to the ground for that.

They Came From The Stars I Saw Them rocked the hell out of the basement of 333 last night -so I'm feeling a bit shabby today. No excuses for not providing some musical entertainment to help you through the weekend though.

First up is Battles - Atlas. I discovered this earlier this week and its out on Warp on 12" with a DJ Koze remix. I've never been convinced by them previously but jeebus this is next level stuff. Its all about the original and its schaffel-tastic to the max and its been on repeat all week. Need to hear this out as it seriously rocks.

I've also been listening to the Soulwax remix of The Klaxons today (it was only a matter of time before the Dewale boys had a run at them) and guess what? Its disappointing. People are creaming themselves over this but its seriously disappointing. The kids love it but that doesn;t make it good does it? Do yourselves a favour and stick Battles on repeat - its a FAR FAR FAR superior musical experience.

Or alternatively boot this up and shake your thing.

No-one knows who they are but following their first track Mountain Machine going up a couple of weeks ago - a new track TIGER has gone up today and is equally as good. I'm trying to convince them to release these tracks on Thisisnotanexit Records but we'll see.....anyways whatever happens these are seriously ones to watch and have a certain amount of schaffel about them to make me watch closely than ever....

Also worth watching out for are the EY3 remixes of OOIOO out on vinyl (£12 import prices!!! ouch) but worth every penny. Especially as you get two versions (and EY3 is a genius!). Plus The Loving Hand remixes of Wolfmother have finally landed on black plastic - worth a look and one of the best remixes The Loving Hand (aka Tim Goldsworthy) has done. Harald Grosskopf's Emphasis (from the album Synthesis) has been re-issued on the marvellous Supersound and after hearing it on the Padded Cell Beatsinspace mix its worth a listen. Finally Trevor 'Action' Jackson returns with a distinctly rave-esque sounding remix of Black Ghosts which has a hardcore drum sample that can't fail to get the kids dancing...

I moaned yesterday about free music and that but this next track is only available as a track on the bonus disc on the new Explosions In The Sky album called All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone and only on the first few hundred copies - so its quite hard to get hold of. Anyway its a great album and a real step up from their previous work. This is the best remix on the remix disc and sounds like classic Four Tet rather than his more recent remix work - killer pianos, post rock guitars, melancholic soundscape and mid-90's WARP esque electronics. Great remix - check it out and go buy the full album - worth it, honest.

I also went and saw !!! last night at The Shepherds Bush Empire. An amazing performance from one of the best live bands around to what can only be described as a dull crowd. The crowd were rubbish - !!! are a band you can totally lose the plot to live and people just stood with arms folded and stared - WRONG!!!!! Anyway particular highlights were Heart Of Hearts, Dear Can, Is This Thing On? and a track that sounded like the bastard child of OLIO but with more OOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMPPPFFFF and a demonic 303 line straight from 1988. I don't know that this was - all I could make out was the repeated line DON'T STOP repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly.

Anyway I need this record more than I want it. Anyone who knows what the hell it is send me a postcard. Otherwise I presume its a newie and I await its proper release.

In other news I got the new Black Devil Disco Club / Quiet Village 12" today. I have no idea what it sounds like but I'm excited about hearing it. There's also a nice Bakazou 12" sat waiting to be enjoyed featuring a nice Reverso' 68 remix. Plus I've got a Lindstrom & Thomas remix of Roxy Music AVALON to have a listen to. Oh and Hippie Priest Bum-Out on the b-side of the new LCD Soundsystem 7" is worth checking. And my man Roy Dank sent me some new Wurst Edits by Lee Douglas which totally ROCK!!! On repeat at the moment................

I'm not some sort of charity dispensing free music to those in need you know - especially when you can quickly log onto a nice online record shop / download shop and purchase some music in seconds that will cost you a few pence. Jeez I give you big lists of good stuff nearly every week to go and buy. And think about it - in this day of age of blogs *whistles* and mp3s and cd swopping think about the poor artists that have worked so hard to put the music out there FOR YOUR LISTENING pleasure and you just STEAL it for free. Go and buy an mp3 and make a band happy eh?


I am though now going to point you in the direction of some free music - AHA! A CONTRADICTION!!!!


But this is ok in my mind as its MIXES and they are like clouds or something and you can't buy these. Plus there's lots of great music on these mixes that GUESS WHAT you should go and buy!

Second, is Andy Butler from Hercules & Love Affair. They're signed to DFA so this makes them cool pretty much straightaway. They Came From The Stars I Saw Them are over in Ireland for the next few days on tour supporting The Unstoppable Kite EP which comes out on March 26th. The next single SIGNALS will be out in the summer and will feature a remix from hotter than hot Emperor Machine. Really excited about this one - but you'll just have to wait until the summer to hear it! In the meantime listen to some Emperor Machine here:

Worth hunting out this week on the old trusty black plastic is the new Kaos track PANOPEEPS as it features a bleeptastic remix from one of my favourite producers / remixers Shit Robot (or Poop Robot as he's sometimes known). It sounds like mid 90s techno but updated for 2007 and sounding as fresh as you like.

Also worth hunting out is the Junior Boys promo 12" with a Carl Craig remix on it - supadoopa limited but worth it. Similarly Domino are also bang on it with the new Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid promo 12" which features a remix from Holden. Total wonky brilliance. And the Carl Craig remix of Faze Action is finally available to buy from juno - totally aces this, the strings in the second half of the track are immense.

Ahoy. There's alot of great music out there at the moment so here's a little lowdown on what I'll be listening to this weekend....

1. Zwicker - I get my kicks at nighttime (Lexx Dub)

I missed this when it first came out (shame on me!) but got turned onto this earlier this week on a mix I heard. Headed straight over to the friendly Kompakt mp3 store and made the purchase and feel much better for spending my €1.39 on this little bass led funker.

2. Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life

Whilst I was at the Kompakt store I picked up this little beauty too. The Gui Boratto album Chromophobia is picking up ahuge amount of hype (album of 20o7 already apparently) but my tastebuds were whet by this Flaming Lips / My Bloody Valentine houser of a track. I almost bought the LP just to own this on vinyl (but went against it as there was quite a few other bits out I wanted....). Search this one out though, its great and epic and is really quite life affirming.

3. Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice (Spiritualized Reversion)

All the post punk has gone. And instead all is left is a Spiritualized drone. I'm still not completely cold on this yet but we'll see....

4. Villalobos - Smokes Magical Passes

Shout out to 20JFG for this one the other week but have really become a massive fan of Villalobos recently (again - sorry - I'm late as always) but this, and his remixes of Depeche Mode and Beck really are something else.

5. Hatchback - White Diamond (Prins Thomas Remix)

Noone else has got this as it's on Thisisnotanexit Records! Prins has given me his rough mix and this is something else - nearly 18 minutes long and is so EPIC it hurts. If this isn't played all summer long I'll eat my summer hat as its so so so good. And don't sleep on the original when we put it out either - its a 10 minute balearic disco gem.

6. They Came From The Stars I Saw Them - The Unstoppable Kite EP

Test pressings arrived yesterday - and it sounds AMAZING. Its released on March 26th so get out there and buy it - seriously worth it. A record in this day and age of copycat-ism that sounds truly unique. The Unstoppable Kite has the bassline of the year by the way.

7. Padded Cell - Face Of The Forest

As good as the a-side Moon Menace don't forget to flip the 12" for the b-side Face Of The Forest and a skronking sax-tastic James & The Contortions-esque track that apparently has been played by JD Twitch for the past 2 months. And what better recommendation than that, eh?

8. Force of Nature - To The Brain (Prins Thomas Remixes)

This isn't out until 20th April on Mule Musiq but managed to snag a copy in my local second hand store for a baragin £4! Also forthcoming on Mule is a nice little Optimo Walkabout 12" sampler with exclusive Naum and Twitch edits (ker-ching!) and a 12" from Tim Sweeney and Tim Goldsworthy under the name TNT featuring two tracks called Don't Stop and Endless Flight. Out in May so watch out for that,

9. Partial Arts - Trauermusik

Slow on this one too but purchased FINALLY today - great track, and all about the original mix for me. Deep and emotive techno.

10. Hercules & Love Affair - Classique / Athene

Forthcoming on DFA I can't stop listening to these two tracks - even if it is through the annoying myspace link. Check 'em out. Probably won't be out for 6 months so you'll just have to do what I do and keep the link in your favourites. Great tracks, seriously.
