The essential purchase for weeks 18 and 19 I'm at a loss with. I've been so dam busy that I haven't had time to even think about buying music. You should go and buy the Big Pink 7" VELVET though which I've recently discovered as it's a sublime piece of music from a band that are rather hyped by the NME etcetera but we'll forgive them that as they can't help it. In regards to week 20 well there are two things you should be getting your pay cheque out for.


The new album from the Manic Street Preachers was released this week entitled JOURNAL FOR PLAGUE LOVERS. I wouldn't normally give a Manic Street Preachers album a second look these days as after Richey disappeared the band mutated from one of the greatest, visceral, intelligent and challenging bands of the 90s into, well, safe middle of the road indie / rock.

BUT this is the album where they have gone back to Richey's last notebook that he gave the band before disappearing and made an album from his words. Plus they got Steve Albini in to press record. And they've got Jenny Saville to the art a la The Holy Bible. I even bought the NME this week to get a better understanding of what the band thought Richey was writing about here I was that excited. And for the first time in a long time I went out and bought an album on the day of release.

I headed straight for the limited edition book edition so I could get my hands on the Richey Edwards lyrics and imagery plus 2 x cds - one of the finished album and one of the demos. Bizarrely the secret track BAG LADY that features on the standard issue cd doesn't feature on the limited edition version. VERY STRANGE!

Anyways the album is worth your hard earned in a major way. There are also a few remixes of key tracks floating around too. Journal For Plague Lovers (An Optimo Espacio Mix) is an absolute killer remix and the Horrors mix available from NME.com is worth a listen. There's an Andrew Weatherall Mix of Peeled Apples which I haven't heard yet but I'm definitely keen to hear.

Speaking of Andrew Weatherall we got his remix of Detachments H.A.L. back last week and it's absolutely HUGE. Watch out for that later in the year as we may put the remix out as a limited promo at somepoint....


The other big release this week is from the magnificent new band PARALLELS. Their debut 3 track EP Ultralight is out on 12" this week on Thisisnotanexit and we are incredibly excited about this band - they feature Cam Findlay who was in Crystal Castles, the wonderful Holly Dodson on vocals, and Joey Kehoe and hail from Toronto in Canada.

They’ve shared billing with established bands like Glass Candy, Fan Death and Sebastien Tellier (Mod Club) and performed for a capacity crowd at The Toronto Fashion Week Closing Finale.

They also of course remixed Detachments The Flowers That Fell which will be out on vinyl in a few weeks time.

Anyways the Ultralight EP is out on 500 only 12" this week available from the usual independent stores around the world. Apart from Piccadilly Records in Manchester who didn't like it. To say they stock Crystal Castles, Kate Bush, Madonna and various 80s italo records - as well as being an independent store apparently supporting independent music and labels - well this does strike me as rather odd but such is life. My favourite store Phonica also refused to stock it as well. So they're no longer my favourite store. I will now be taking my custom to Rough Trade and Juno. I advise you to do the same. If you can't find a 12" then just drop us a line and we'll sort you out.

For week 17 there was only one contender this week.

Burial & Four Tet - Moth / Wolf Club (Text) 12"

Out of nowhere comes an incredibly exciting collaboration in the form of Kieren Hebden and Burial. The first new material from Burial in ages and the big question is DOES THIS LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS?

It's a resounding yes.

Moth on the A-side takes Kieren's trademark electronic fx (sounding like the Ringer doublepack he released last year) but with Burials trademark broken dubstep beats treatment. A break 2/3 of the way through the track brings in some mournful female sighs and then a final flourish until the end. Totally beautiful and total head music.

The flip side Wolf Club is very different with a traditional 4/4 arrangement but sounding like Villalobos has been hanging out on the night buses of London than your standard 4/4 beats. Incredibly mournful and wistful it had the goosebumps up as soon as the fractured female vocal elements swayed into the mix. An absolute stunner!!!

This has sold out in about 5 seconds everywhere so if you see one snap it up.

First up the mighty Brain Machine are performing live for the first time tonight at the Men & Machines night at Stereo in Glasgow. I unfortunately won't be there so am rather jealous of everyone who will be. Hopefully there will be some photos to share later this week. If you see a copy of the Brain Machine LP I recommend you snap one up as the warehouse have lost a bunch of them meaning that it's looking like less than 100 made it out into the wide world. And if you've got one already - well consider yourself the owner of a bit of a rarity by the looks of things. We've got a few cds left in stock if anyone wants one. For those that live in London this week see's Detachments play at the Buffalo Bar in Highbury & Islington on Tuesday 28th April in support of the release of their new single THE FLOWERS THAT FELL. It's part of the brilliant Offset night and also features ADVERT and Relics live too - plus myself playing some post punk and 80s synth records. In terms of what I've been buying the past few weeks, well, these are what I've invested my pennies on....


The most eagerly awaited dubstep album since Burial's second album and boy is it worth the wait. Not only does it include some of his already released tracks that you may well know - such as Vancouver - but it breaks the boundaries of the walls that are dubstep. It's never solely confined to the 140bpm offbeats and instead really shows Martyn's influences that are obviously vast and wide - taking in beautiful piano interludes, deep vocal house and the uplifting melancholia of transmat techno strings. It's been said that this will stand the test of time as doesn't fit completely into the time or place - yes it is rooted in dubstep - but it is an album that is much more than that and crucially is all the better for it.

Martyn has also cleverly priced the cd really cheaply at £6.99 and then also put the album out on a beautiful triple album format at a usual album price of around £15.99 so really you have no excuse to pick it up on one of the formats!

And this is a right little sneaky exclusive. Very limited in a silk screened sleeve from Precious System - This Is The Voice Of Love this is only available from the Innercityvisions web store. It's a great disco techno genre crossing record with a great nod to the past with dj tools on the b-side (Bassapella!!). Prins Thomas gave it a rinsing at Bla last week in Oslo and it's one of those secret weapons that will be making sense all across the summer.

Also over the past couple of weeks I bought the Salem - OHK 7" which has been released on the Japanese Big Love label. You know how much of a fan I am and as always the mighty Salem deliver an ode to the darkness and horror.

For those wondering what They Came From The Stars I Saw Them are up to well they have a bunch of gigs lined up over the summer PLUS a show at Bestival in September so if you've got your tickets get ready for that one! They have a guitarist now too.

Coming soon for the summer is the They Came From The Stars I Saw Them IBIZA ep featuring remixes of Rabbit Seal Monkey by King of Town and Tronik Youth plus a remix of The Unstoppable Kite by Hatchback. A couple of tracks for the night time in Ibiza and a track for the days by the beach too. Nice. It will be out on limited edition sand coloured vinyl (I might be making that up.....).

And we're back on air....after radio silence mainly due to the day job (yes Thisisnotanexit is not a full time job unfortunately but run in those small moments grasped through the day and evening when there is 5 minutes to stop and think. Those of you that log off and go home at 5.30pm with the days work done I do that and get home knowing that there are a good few hours left of the working day to do thisisnotanexit work - such is life) anyways I digress. Yes there has been silence. Although for those with a twitter obsession the minutaie of my day is caught via the TINAErecords twitter. Mainly that fulfils the function of updating you literally as things happen. Fever Ray - Fever Ray LP

The most interesting release of this week is OBVIOUSLY the Fever Ray album. For those who obsess about The Knife (and there are enough of us) a solo album from Karin is enough to have got me excited since I heard about it. When I Grow up sated my appetite for about 5 seconds but this is the real deal. Apparently written in those moments she got to herself when the child she had just had was sleeping it captures a dark melancholia and suburban angst that was last seen evidenced on Kate Bush's Aerial (King Of The Mountain and that part of the album: "Washing machine....washing maaaaaaccchhhhhiiiiinnnneeeeeeeee). Anyways this album is absolutely staggering in it's beauty and darkness and pure pure majesty. For those of you with taste in music if you don't rush out and buy this well then you shouldn't be reading this. You should retire to detention with a copy of Rip It Up And Start Again and not come back until you can talk to me about the history of Factory records. Or Mute. You decide. Anyways just go an buy it. SERIOUSLY!

The other amazing release of the past couple of weeks is the Den Haan - Release The Beast (Optimo Music) 12".

For a start it's on Optimo Music. Enough said! But anyways this is a pure italo disco glam thumper that stinks of Giorgio Moroder and shaking your thing on a yacht in 1984 with the girls from that Robert Palmer video. Pure sleaze. Pure dancefloor beauty.

Those are the two records you should buy. That's it. Job done.

Prins Thomas - Mammut (Full Pupp)

The new Prins Thomas production touched down this week which has apparently been a year in production. It features a track called Mammut which has been compared to Thisisnotanexits very own White Diamond by Hatchback. It also features a cover of a Villalobos track called Fitzpatrick. Finally it features a track called Remiksosaurus. Sounds like a brilliant title! Have a listen to Mammu below on this groovy little music player and make your own mind up.

I will be foregoing Prins Thomas' latest work for the latest 2 x releases from Crue-l (a rather fantastic Japanese label that are desperately hard to get hold of in the uk!). Anyways this week they have released two tracks on a new offshoot called Crue-l Rouse.

The first is from Stoned Green Apples and is called Sugar k / Peter Pan. Sugar K comes remixed by Yura Yura Teikoku in vocal and instrumental forms fresh from their blink and you miss it 200 copies only DFA release. Peter Pan comes with remixes from the man that is Luger E-Go who is one of my favourite remixers from the past few years - everything he remixes is pure gold. His remix of Fran-key a few years ago is absolute dynamite!

Part one of Noise of Art’s weekend of Italian Stallions sees the awesome Hell Yeah! Records bring their leading lights over along with some seriously messed up basslines. Already heroes at home, Blatta and Inesha are threatening to follow in Crookers footsteps. Look out Paris, the Italians are coming. Blatta and Inesha are joined by fellow Italian and Hell Yeah! head honcho and Italo rave master Marco Gallerani. Meanwhile home grown psychedelic indie dance kids They Came From the Stars I Saw Them will be adding their stunning live performance to the proceedings and whipping the dancefloor into a stage diving froth pit. No doubt they’ll be playing their fanstastic Moon Song single. In true Noise of Art style there’ll be splendid visuals and Noise of Art founder Ben Osborne (recently described by Time Out as “very ace”) will be keeping everybody dancing in eclectic Balearic style between the gaps.

Following last July's sell out week of events, the NOISE OF ART returns to turn the Southbank centre into a disco dancing space ship - as Ether sees the debut of Noise of Art's latest project, DEEP SPACE DISCO, a music and art clubbing event. Noise of Art will launch Deep Space Disco at the Ether Festival on Sunday 19 April. Featuring an international line-up of Musicians, DJs, performance artists and visuals teams, amongst those crafting cosmic grooves to re-edited Soviet-era space films and fantastically costumed performers, will be top New York DFA act The Juan Maclean. The night will also feature the UK debut of DJ T (founder of Berlin's ultra cool Get Physical Music) and Thomas Schumacher's new collaboration project. In another first, new Faroe Islands discovery, Orca, will play live. Further debuts are to be announced.
The event will include visual artists manipulating Soviet era space films from the 1960s, set to space disco grooves by an International line-up, featuring: DJ T vs THOMAS SCHUMACHER (Get Physical, Berlin) doing their first UK show as a duo; THE JUAN MACLEAN (New York, DFA) performing their London debut as a full live band; plus the widely tipped LES HOMMES DU TRAIN (Totolo, Paris), DJ sets from Ben Osborne (Noise of Art founder) and DJ Sonny (Mighty Rumble, Singapore) and performance art by the IMMACULATE EXTREMISTS', art by OVERLAP, FUNKCUTTER, PUNKVERT, PRICKIMAGE and more to be announced.


CHATEAU FLIGHT, the electronic duo made up of seminal Parisian producers and DJs I:Cube and Gilb’r, will perform their soundtrack to Les Vampires LIVE in the QEH.
The night also sees the UK debut show of ORCA and BUDAM, two of the leading lights of the music revolution emanating from the Faroe Isles - both soon to be the subject of a feature in Observer Music Magazine.


Orca have taken the Noise of Art principle to a logical conclusion by creating their own instruments from disused farm machinery. Their music is a powerful, abstract electronica that escapes easy comparisons. Budam combines song writing with story-telling and performance in ways that transform and merge different artistic and musical traditions. Almost out of nowhere, a new musical scene has sprung upon us, with Faroe islands bands being snapped up by labels like Sunday Best etc. They have just finished working with Yann Tiersen (composer of music for Amelie) and are looking like they will do for the Faroes what Bjork’s generation did for Iceland.
Noise of Art will be using film from 1911 and rarely seen footage of early soviet space training. This is part of an ongoing project that is unearthing unknown gems from the BFI’s National Archive and showing films that would otherwise be collecting dust to a new audience.

Noise of Art celebrates the convergence of music and visual art brought about by the digital age and over the past three years has worked with established electronic musicians and artists as well as introduced new talent. Debut UK performances include bringing many of the Ed Banger roster from Paris to the UK as well as new artists such as Nathan Fake, while also debuting and commissioning new material from established acts such as Bomb The Bass, Booka Shade, MANDY, Coldcut, Lemon Jelly, Sebastian Tellier, Laurent Garnier and Chateau Flight.

During this time Noise of Art events have been held at such esteemed and diverse venues as Tate Britain, The Key, De La Warr Pavilion, the National Film Theatre, London, Bar Music Hall, The Social, Latitude Festival, Institute of Contemporary Art, Bongo club Edinburgh, Caves Edinburgh, Institute Francais, Komedia Brighton, 333, Glasgow College of Art and most recently in January this year the BFI Southbank with the first of its ‘Nite Versions’ series focussing on EA Dupont’s 1920 film of London club nightlife ‘Piccadilly’.

I get sent alot of messages from bands / artists / djs / producers all with attachments, downloads, demos and other paraphanalia. Sometimes within this maelstrom of music there are gems. The majority of the time I wonder if the person or whoever has sent me the message knows what Thisisnotanexit Records actually releases (I mean I've had some really weird myspace pages sent to me that are seriously not what Thisisnotanexit is about. Tip for those wanting a deal - don't just send blanket emails and messages to all and sundry - have a look at what else they've released and see if your material would fit with the ethos). Anyways I was sent a friend request by Liquid Vega the other day - as always with resignation I clicked on the link - and lo and behold mighty streams of musical joy erupted through my headphones.

In an ideal world Thisisnotanexit would release some of this amazing music but we unfortunately have so much on our plates at the moment we can't fit it into our schedule. Maybe we'll get them to remix something for the label instead. Still, have a click on the link and have a listen to these four tracks of aural bliss.
