Eat Your Own Ears: Detachments @ Cargo Tonight (preview from The Guardian Guide)

The Eat Your Own Ears crew are nothing if not consistent. Since their inception, they've managed to hover enticingly between the underground and overground, offering a platform to all kinds of awe-inspiring music. It looks like there'll be no slacking from them in 2010 either, as one of their first events of the year already looks like it's going to be one of the most exciting. Showcasing two bands so hotly tipped it's a surprise that neither of them have spontaneously combusted, tonight Cargo would do well to line the stage in flame-retardant tape. First up are Detachments, who have been making sweet music with a dream production gang which includes James Ford, Trevor Jackson, Tim Goldsworthy and Andrew Weatherall. Then it's the turn of tipped London lo-fi electro trio Is Tropical, while DJ action from Stopmakingme will bind the whole thing together in order to make a near-perfect pop package.

***It's free entry tonight before 11pm with Detachments onstage at 10pm. See you there!***

Night Plane - Signs in the Sky

Intro: Let the Haters Hate
1. Norway Light Spiral
2. Kremlin Pyramid
3. Cava Scura
4. Blue I Feel (When I'm Feeling Down)
5. Don't Come Running
6. Here On Earth

As a special holiday gift, Night Plane brings you "Signs in the Sky," a 23-minute mix of new and unreleased original material - afro/beardo/deepo styles - in honor of two recent aerial mysteries. Within twenty-four hours of one another, two strange phenomena recently occurred in the night skies of the Northern Hemisphere. The first, a swirling abyss of blue light, shone above Oslo. The second, a hovering pyramid, thought to be much as one mile long, menaced the airspace over Moscow's Red Square. Numerous eyewitness and video testimonies for both events exist. The light spiral is confirmed to have occurred on Dec 9th, and some accounts place the Kremlin pyramid around the same time. Russia's Pravda news agency, however, did not report the pyramid until Dec 18th - possibly since the spiral was announced as the result of a failed Russian missile launch, the Russian authorities did not want the event of the still-unexplained pyramid to be associated with the Norwegian light display. Some conspiracy theorists read both spiral and pyramid as related in some way to Obama's Nobel Peace prize speech given on Dec 10th. Are the spiral and pyramid related? Is one or both of extraterrestrial origin? I mean, holy shit, that's a goddamn pyramid floating over the Kremlin. Enjoy.

Last Christmas....

I don't particularly like Christmas songs. Call me grumpy if you like. I have though always had a soft spot for Wham's Last Christmas. God knows why. It has a centre of melancholy that isn't the stupid grinning banality of other pop Christmas songs though. I think I even own it on 7" [10p sticker on it from Oxfam upon further investigation]. Not sure the last time I played it but it's there if I ever fancy it.

Anyways when this landed in my inbox as a present from the wonderful Micron 63 [The Fall - Soft Cell - Fad Gadget - Nitzer Ebb influences - MY EARS AND HEART SAY YES - further reading: Death Is Colder Than Love 7" from earlier in 2009] I was quite overjoyed that they'd turned Last Christmas into a wonderful dark hearted piece of electronic synth-poppery complete with a synth line of their own choosing that is simply quite joyous. I dare you not to listen to it. And then put it straight back on again.

And how often can you say that these days?

Get it here. 100 downloads / 7 days / whichever comes first.

MICRON 63 - LAST CHRISTMAS

If the world was of my making rather than the strange creation it actually is this would be battling whatever abomination the X Factor has vomited forth this year. But instead it's Rage Against The Machine [which by the way please buy if you live in the UK - I don't care for Cheryl Cole and her "stop it - it's mean" whimpering - just do it and see if we can at least make a dent in the black hole of Butlins on ITV1 talent no-show]. Anyways for a minute there I lost myself.

Check Micron 63's myspace out and some of the demos from their forthcoming album.

They're onto something.

They may have sold something [S-O-U-L to the horned one] to get this music but it could be worth it.

I always wondered what Salem looked like. Is this them? is that Heather?

Is this is a myth?

Or a riddle?

In 2010 we may finally unleash the Detachments track featuring HEATHER from Salem on vocals called SANDS OF TIME. Maybe we'll put it on the Detachments album. Maybe we'll put it on a 7". Maybe we'll give it away.

It is nightmare / dream music - the sound of the black lodge and Agent Cooper wondering where his nice cup of Joe went and why Wyndham Earl is a shake shake shaking like Slim Harpo asked him to. The horror. The fear. The beauty.

Black Meteoric Star this week announce that the Gavin Russom piloted spaceship will head off in search of The Crystal Ark in 2010. Following the dual piloted Delia & Gavin project that skirted the surface of (THE DAYS OF) MARS and ably assisted by Carl Craig and DFA on remix command. Alongside that we visited the Black Leotard Front (whilst somehow losing HEY COACH) and Black Meteoric Star have kept things pulsing through 2009. Along with Gavin Russom going on solo missions to try and rescue Palms and Peter Dundov.

Now we plunge ever onwards with Viva Ruiz helming the microphone and a sense of palpable excitement as the matter collates and The Crystal Ark will appear in February 2010.

More reading and a Gavin Russom mix available here:

Detachments PIX interview

Looking backwards to look forwards

I've been looking backwards more than forwards recently with eyes on the early 80's minimal wave and synth experiments - Chris Carters headspace experiments and Chris & Cosey's frozen worlds of grey and ice particularly goosebumpy - as well as the UK BBC4 synthpop documentary making me dig out my Mute Documents Boxset and listening repeatedly to Fad Gadget demos on repeat. Maybe it's the UK suddenly becoming cold and grey. Maybe it's just modern music sounding so over produced it just fails to move me.
I'm not sure how everything fits together but some ((a small minority)) of dubstep sounds somehow linked to the early 80s for me. Especially some of Shackleton's recent output - that clanking industrial sound of Nick Cave banging a piece of metal - I'm not sure how much Berlin links into all this but it's historic impact on music and art in general can't be denied.

"I see the towers falling"

Blood On My Hands repeat to fade...

I've been reading JG Ballard's The Atrocity Exhibition again recently. Frightened by the prophecy?

Crash Course In Science are one of those groups that had a very short life but seem to be just, for me, a perfect expression of what music should be.

RAW
POWERFUL
EMOTIONAL

I remember hearing Cardboard Lamb played by Optimo and was knocked soundways by it. It sounds like the future the way it was supposed to play out. Not what we've ended up with.

Here's a demo that was never officially released. It sounds like the basis for Losing My Edge. SRSLY >>>>>>>>

Other CCIS sources.

I'm DJing at Pure Groove in Farringdon London tonight. Come down and say hi. What will I be playing?

If you can draw a line through Silver Apples via David Bowie's LOW (Side 2) via Crash Course In Science turn left at Mute and head straight through Detroit techno (some at 33+8) turn right at DFA+Output and end up in Shackleton's basement in Berlin (whilst Spectral Empire sit in the corner tweaking a prophet) then this could be the story of your life.
Turn your head inside out.

Then Detachments will play live and channel the spirits of: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talking Heads, New Order, WARP and some of the more interesting dubstep ( raw - glacial - rather than farty farty updated garage / breakbeat ) into something modern and relevant.

Detachments - Circles (Remixes Part Two)

It's all go at Thisisnotanexit HQ at the moment with two releases out this week.

The second set of Detachments Circles Remixes hit the shops this week on 12" featuring Martyn's Round & Round Mix, the Mighty Mouse Remix and the King Of Town Remix.

A big set of remixes. The Martyn Round & Round Mix features on Fabric 50 out in January and has been supported by Kode9, Annie Mac, DBridge, Zomby and Martyn himself. The Mighty Mouse Remix has been highlighted by Aeroplane as one of their favourite tracks of the year with a poppy nu-disco rework and played on Radio 1. Finally the King of Town delivers an absolutely huge electro monster of a remix which has been played at Optimo nearly every week for the past 6 months and is a bit of an anthem there (apparently).

Anyways grab a 12" whilst you can - we were told earlier this week that nearly every copy has been snapped up by shops (there are 400 in existence) and will be sold out in a week or two.

If you want to buy a copy direct just let us know - we'll send you the tracks on 320kps as well.

Everyone's a winner as we make a touch more money on selling directly to people as we don't have to pay distribution fees (in fact those copies we sell directly rather than at shops keeps us afloat as a label a touch longer).

Naum Gabo - Pictur 12" (300 only)

Two years in the making this week sees the release of Naum Gabo's Pictur 12".

We ended up not featuring the original version of Pictur as the remixes we ended up with were simply too stunning. The a-side features Joakim taking the track on a 10 minute acid disco excursion with a quite massive breakdown. I've been playing this out for 18 months now and I get asked about it whenever I play it.

On the b-side features two Naum Gabo edits of the 24 minute The Loving Hand Remix (The Loving Hand is DFA's Tim Goldsworthy for those that don't know). Owing to The Loving Hand Remix being a 6 part 24 minute kosmische journey and quite literally being unplayable in a club (unless you want a toilet break whilst DJing) Naum Gabo took it upon themselves to pull out two of their favourite sections of the remix and edit them into dancefloor playable versions. So on the 12" you get these two exclusive edits.

The 12" sleeve also features a painting given to Naum Gabo by Turner Prize nominee Cathy Wilkes. The sleeve is therefore in full colour with an expensive matt finish to make the visual element of the release truly stunning.

We are releasing 300 only of these hence the high price. About 100 exist in the UK as 200 have been shipped around the world. Don't miss out on what for us is a quite special release.

The release will only be available on 12" vinyl until the 12" is sold out and then we will release this digitally.

If you order a copy of the 12" via us at Thisisnotanexit HQ though we'll send you the release as 320kps MP3's as well. Email us for details and we'll let you know how to do it.

The 24 minute The Loving Hand Remix will see the light of day in 2010 - it has been compared to E2-E4, LCD SS 45:33 and Can's Bel Air to the people who have heard it.

Detachments are currently on a tour of the UK. We have put together a very limited tour cd to accompany the tour - we have around 20 here in the Thisisnotanexit office for sale for those who don't live in the UK or missed the shows.

The cd features 6 x tracks:

1. Messages
2. The Flowers That Fell (Live Acoustic)
3. Circles (Diesel U Music Session)
4. Fear No Fear (Diesel U Music Session)
5. The Far
6. Make It Easy On Yourself

If you want one simply send £7.50 via paypal to: simon.thisisnotanexit@gmail.com

First come first served. Once they're gone they're gone.

Little Boots - Earthquake (Detachments Remix)

How different does Little Boots look when she first appeared all brunette and indie compared with the Kylie-esque image these days.

And how different is Detachments take on Little Boots Earthquake than the original. It sounds a bit like how LCD Soundsystem jamming with Ms Boots would do if you ask us. Quite a combination.

The essential purchase....

This week sees the release of the first set of remixes of Detachments new single. There are two more sets to come. We're hugely excited about this release as every remix is an absolute killer.

This first set contains the legend that is Andrew Weatherall taking H.A.L. losing the vocals, cranking the bass and kicking out the jams. The bassline is absolutely immense. In fact Jah Wobble may well have popped in and dropped this it's so huge. Anyway's it's already got a load of support - featuring on Cosmo Vitelli's TSUGI's best of 2009 Cd, Bill Brewster describing it as simply 'MASSIVE' and Mock N Toof calling it 'PURE ENERGY'.

Don't sleep on the flip though.

The B-side begins with the Beg To Differ Dub Remix of CIRCLES - this is Roy Dank from Wurst and Nick Chacona's new project. So good James Murphy is playing it.

The second track on the b-side is the Night Plane Remix of CIRCLES. Sounding a touch Aeroplane with a synth freakout and balearic nod Ben Pistor emailed us earlier this week saying he gets asked about this every time he plays it. The signs are strong.

A big package. Every mix a winner. Get to it.

So big it's a Phonica essential release.

The majority of the remixes and tracks on this cd are exclusives and not previously released. So a nice little addition to your copy of 'We Are All In The Gutter But Some Of Us Are Looking At They Came From The Stars I Saw Them'.
