Looking backwards to look forwards

I've been looking backwards more than forwards recently with eyes on the early 80's minimal wave and synth experiments - Chris Carters headspace experiments and Chris & Cosey's frozen worlds of grey and ice particularly goosebumpy - as well as the UK BBC4 synthpop documentary making me dig out my Mute Documents Boxset and listening repeatedly to Fad Gadget demos on repeat. Maybe it's the UK suddenly becoming cold and grey. Maybe it's just modern music sounding so over produced it just fails to move me.
I'm not sure how everything fits together but some ((a small minority)) of dubstep sounds somehow linked to the early 80s for me. Especially some of Shackleton's recent output - that clanking industrial sound of Nick Cave banging a piece of metal - I'm not sure how much Berlin links into all this but it's historic impact on music and art in general can't be denied.
"I see the towers falling"
Blood On My Hands repeat to fade...
I've been reading JG Ballard's The Atrocity Exhibition again recently. Frightened by the prophecy?
Crash Course In Science are one of those groups that had a very short life but seem to be just, for me, a perfect expression of what music should be.
RAW
POWERFUL
EMOTIONAL
I remember hearing Cardboard Lamb played by Optimo and was knocked soundways by it. It sounds like the future the way it was supposed to play out. Not what we've ended up with.
Here's a demo that was never officially released. It sounds like the basis for Losing My Edge. SRSLY >>>>>>>>
Other CCIS sources.
I'm DJing at Pure Groove in Farringdon London tonight. Come down and say hi. What will I be playing?
If you can draw a line through Silver Apples via David Bowie's LOW (Side 2) via Crash Course In Science turn left at Mute and head straight through Detroit techno (some at 33+8) turn right at DFA+Output and end up in Shackleton's basement in Berlin (whilst Spectral Empire sit in the corner tweaking a prophet) then this could be the story of your life.
Turn your head inside out.
Then Detachments will play live and channel the spirits of: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talking Heads, New Order, WARP and some of the more interesting dubstep ( raw - glacial - rather than farty farty updated garage / breakbeat ) into something modern and relevant.

Detachments - Circles (Remixes Part Two)

It's all go at Thisisnotanexit HQ at the moment with two releases out this week.
The second set of Detachments Circles Remixes hit the shops this week on 12" featuring Martyn's Round & Round Mix, the Mighty Mouse Remix and the King Of Town Remix.
A big set of remixes. The Martyn Round & Round Mix features on Fabric 50 out in January and has been supported by Kode9, Annie Mac, DBridge, Zomby and Martyn himself. The Mighty Mouse Remix has been highlighted by Aeroplane as one of their favourite tracks of the year with a poppy nu-disco rework and played on Radio 1. Finally the King of Town delivers an absolutely huge electro monster of a remix which has been played at Optimo nearly every week for the past 6 months and is a bit of an anthem there (apparently).
Anyways grab a 12" whilst you can - we were told earlier this week that nearly every copy has been snapped up by shops (there are 400 in existence) and will be sold out in a week or two.
If you want to buy a copy direct just let us know - we'll send you the tracks on 320kps as well.
Everyone's a winner as we make a touch more money on selling directly to people as we don't have to pay distribution fees (in fact those copies we sell directly rather than at shops keeps us afloat as a label a touch longer).
Naum Gabo - Pictur 12" (300 only)

Two years in the making this week sees the release of Naum Gabo's Pictur 12".
We ended up not featuring the original version of Pictur as the remixes we ended up with were simply too stunning. The a-side features Joakim taking the track on a 10 minute acid disco excursion with a quite massive breakdown. I've been playing this out for 18 months now and I get asked about it whenever I play it.
On the b-side features two Naum Gabo edits of the 24 minute The Loving Hand Remix (The Loving Hand is DFA's Tim Goldsworthy for those that don't know). Owing to The Loving Hand Remix being a 6 part 24 minute kosmische journey and quite literally being unplayable in a club (unless you want a toilet break whilst DJing) Naum Gabo took it upon themselves to pull out two of their favourite sections of the remix and edit them into dancefloor playable versions. So on the 12" you get these two exclusive edits.
The 12" sleeve also features a painting given to Naum Gabo by Turner Prize nominee Cathy Wilkes. The sleeve is therefore in full colour with an expensive matt finish to make the visual element of the release truly stunning.
We are releasing 300 only of these hence the high price. About 100 exist in the UK as 200 have been shipped around the world. Don't miss out on what for us is a quite special release.
The release will only be available on 12" vinyl until the 12" is sold out and then we will release this digitally.
If you order a copy of the 12" via us at Thisisnotanexit HQ though we'll send you the release as 320kps MP3's as well. Email us for details and we'll let you know how to do it.
The 24 minute The Loving Hand Remix will see the light of day in 2010 - it has been compared to E2-E4, LCD SS 45:33 and Can's Bel Air to the people who have heard it.

Little Boots - Earthquake (Detachments Remix)

How different does Little Boots look when she first appeared all brunette and indie compared with the Kylie-esque image these days.
And how different is Detachments take on Little Boots Earthquake than the original. It sounds a bit like how LCD Soundsystem jamming with Ms Boots would do if you ask us. Quite a combination.
Little Boots - Earthquake (Detachments Remix)
Up for 14 days and / or 100 downloads and then it's gone.

The essential purchase....

This week sees the release of the first set of remixes of Detachments new single. There are two more sets to come. We're hugely excited about this release as every remix is an absolute killer.
This first set contains the legend that is Andrew Weatherall taking H.A.L. losing the vocals, cranking the bass and kicking out the jams. The bassline is absolutely immense. In fact Jah Wobble may well have popped in and dropped this it's so huge. Anyway's it's already got a load of support - featuring on Cosmo Vitelli's TSUGI's best of 2009 Cd, Bill Brewster describing it as simply 'MASSIVE' and Mock N Toof calling it 'PURE ENERGY'.
Don't sleep on the flip though.
The B-side begins with the Beg To Differ Dub Remix of CIRCLES - this is Roy Dank from Wurst and Nick Chacona's new project. So good James Murphy is playing it.
The second track on the b-side is the Night Plane Remix of CIRCLES. Sounding a touch Aeroplane with a synth freakout and balearic nod Ben Pistor emailed us earlier this week saying he gets asked about this every time he plays it. The signs are strong.
A big package. Every mix a winner. Get to it.
So big it's a Phonica essential release.

Since the release of the Ultralight EP Parallels have become quite an in demand band. Current hype band Delphic have recently enlisted their remixing skills (as seen on their first remix outing for Thisisnotanexit remixing Detachments The Flowers That Fell into a pop disco masterpiece) for their new single 'This Momentary' out now on hipbloglabel Kitsune. The real killer hook on Parallels remixes is that vocalist Holly Dodson adds that extra little something. When she drifts into the mix at 3:49 that's when the remix really takes flight (similarly with the backing vocals on the Flowers That Fell Remix). Parallels are pretty busy at the moment finishing their debut album but they will soon also have a new track called FIND THE FIRE featured on the next Kitsune compilation out in September time. They are also remixing HEALTH's next single too so watch out for that. For now have a listen to their Delphic Remix. And if you like it buy a copy of the 12" or a decent mp3 of it.

Doyens of dark paranoid twitch inducing disco SPECTRAL EMPIRE return in a few weeks time with their latest offering to the dark gods. On bended knees they offer Black Shark - the follow up to their first situation INNERFEARENCE / THE MINOTAUR. Black Shark has it's own video which you should all have seen already - if not here it is from cult video maker Tommyboy.
In honour of this new release we have an exclusive mix for you from Spectral Empire. They didn't offer up any explanation or tracklist or anything. I don't think it even contains any Spectral Empire music. It's just what it is. 1 hour and 14 minutes of exceptional pickings from dusty vinyl emporiums from the past 50 years. I've asked them for a tracklist as there are some sublime moments on here but unfortunately they won't let Thisisnotanexit know what their secret pickings are. If anyone can identify more than 5 tracks in the mix and post them in the comments then we'll send you a Thisisnotanexit goody bag.
Black Shark is released on August 24th on 12" with a remix of Innerfearence from Chateau Flight and an exclusive track called KM-50 Spectral Assault Mix. The release has already been played by: Aeroplane, Trevor Jackson, Ewan Pearson, Danny Howells, Optimo, Mike Simonetti and Shit Robot. A sign of the releases quality if ever there was one.

Night Plane Chinese Shadows Promo Mix
Night Plane's debut release CHINESE SHADOWS is released on Thisisnotanexit on August 17th on a tasty black 12" and new fangled digital download. It's got 3 tracks and sounds like balearic disco gone wrong. It's a situation of the highest order. Opiate disco (for the masses) if you will.
DFA are already chomping at the bit for Night Plane to give them a remix but we beat them to it - download the Night Plane Chinese Shadows Promo Mix to hear the exclusive Night Plane Remix of Detachments Circles which is coming out later in 2009.
If you want a COPY drop us an email and we'll sort you out. If we can cut out the middle men and collaborate together it's a better experience for all concerned.
Be realistic. Demand the impossible.

Jeff & Jane Hudson

I've been listening to Jeff & Jane today and the Flesh album after cleaning up my collection. The FLESH LP is full of future sounding synth experiments from 1981 that sound like the future. Seriously awesome for when it was made. Listen to this and then listen to La Roux and tell me which is better, eh eh eh...anyways as the sun disappears and the summer goes grey listen to this.
Here's Gavin Russom fave HELP ME from Flesh. Download and enjoy. Killer track.
Jeff & Jane - Help Me (From Flesh LP)
And if you like this head over to their official site where you can download all of FLESH for free. Wow. Good eh.

Apologies for the lack of the regular weekly purchase column but I've been so dam busy the past few weeks. It doesn't mean I've not bought a few bits and pieces though. So straight into what I recommend you check out from the past few weeks....
Essential Purchase week 21

Essential Purchase week 21
BV Dub - To Live (Smallfish) 3" cd
Brock Van Wey has featured on the thisisnotanexit blog before for a previous release on Millions Of Moments of which I spoke about the depth of emotion BV Dub brings to his music. He himself calls his music "sadness, idealistic, daydreams, regret, thought, hope, life". Indeed his music is the type that won't have the hands in the air and the masses screaming for one more. This is music with heart and soul. The stuff you save for staring out of the window on a train journey, on the night bus home, over a coffee on your own as it rains outside...you know what I mean. Anyways this was released on 100 x 3" cds and sold out within about 5 seconds. Due to the gushing praise for the release (and by god it is an amazing 20 minute journey) Smallfish have pressed some more. Go get. It's like £5.99 and your music money should be for people like BV Dub and not to those careerists on the majors.
You can also download a whole load of BV Dub mixes from his website. All worth checking. There's 10 of them so that's about 10 hours of free music. Get to it.
And some kind soul has uploaded the 2 parts of 'To Live' to Youtube if you want to experience it before you buy.
Essential Purchase week 22

Optimo presents...In Order To Edit
Next week I'm going to Optimo for the first proper time (I'm not counting the time I DJed there as that's not really 'going to optimo'). Anyways I cannot wait to experience the full optimo effect in the subbie. As you all know I'm such an Optimo obsessive Twitch and Wilkes could fart over a drum loop and I'd probably buy it. Probably. Anyways this is the new selection from JD Twitch who got access to the full R&S catalogue and put together a special mix cd. It's bloody brilliant. Go and buy it and dance round your bedroom to this. It beats most techno being produced these days that's for sure.

Black Meteroic Star - World Eater / Death Tunnel (DFA) 12" / Black Meteoric Star CD
Speaking of techno go and buy this. Just do it. It's by Gavin Russom one half of Black Leotard Front (remember Casual Friday?) and it's just absolutely immense. DFA have been really clever and put all the tracks together in shortened form on a cd and all the extended versions on 12"s so if like me you love this stuff you'll buy both the cd AND the 12" for the extended mixes. Massive trippy speaker blowing house music. Do it do it do it.
And check his mix of German band Palms too. Like wow.
The man builds his own synths for christsakes! None of this 'i'll get my ableton soft synth out' he's a bloody genius.

Black Meteoric Star - Dominatron / Anthem (DFA) 12"
Yep. And Mr. Black Meteoric Star will again be the purchase of the week. And the week after too when the final of the three 12"s gets released!
This weekend I am back in my home town of York. Upon my arrival my parents gave me a load of records they had managed to save from being thrown in the bin. I was unsure of what might be in there and the quality but I got VERY VERY lucky!!
Here's what I got:
The Stooges - The Stooges LP
U2 - Boy LP
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising LP
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation LP
U2 - 3D Dance Mixes Promo 12"
The Sisters Of Mercy - Body And Soul 12"
The Sisters Of Mercy - Alice 12"
All in exceptional condition. They'd been kept in a shed so the sleeves are a little worn but the records look hardly played. Awesome!
Finally here's a little treat for you. Here's the acoustic version of The Flowers That Fell that Sebastien recorded for the Diesel Radio Show I did a couple of weeks ago. Enjoy.

On Monday 22nd June the remixes of Detachments The Flowers That Fell will be released on a very limited white label 12". Only 200 copies have been pressed. It features Capracara (fresh from his King Of Witches release on DFA), Parallels (fresh from their debut release on Thisisnotanexit Records! And remixing Sally Shapiro and Delphic at the moment), Thee Four Horsemen and The Max Moreau Quartet.
If you would like to buy a copy head to the shops on Monday - or we have 5 copies here at the label store for sale. Just drop us a note if you want one - they are £5.99 each. There are none left at the warehouse so once they're gone they're gone!
I'll be back over the weekend with a full 4 week catch up of the essential purchase. A bumper feast of records and cds you should have bought.
I'm off to spend 2 hours on a train with my laptop trying to finish a new mix. I hope the train has plug sockets otherwise I'm going to be VERY unhappy.
